Pitch and Win at the
Fair by Jerry LaBrosse
Members of
the MGSHPA staged another “Pitch and Win” event, the latest at the Hennepin
County Fair August 3-6, 2006. The event draws about 5,000 fairgoers mostly from
the western side of the Twin Cities. The weather was hot and dry. In the
afternoon it was a bit breezy at times, which was welcome.
Five
portable pits were set up and filled with sand provided by the fair staff. One
full court and 3 half courts were set up to let fairgoers try their hand at pitching
a few shoes. Prizes provided by the fair staff were handed out to all the
juniors, and adults who made a point or a ringer. More importantly, the
fairgoers were learning that there is such a thing as organized horseshoe
pitching. Having the MGSHPA Hall of Fame trailer set up at the site enhanced
this fact. Hand out material was given to those who were interested. A few
folks expressed interest in joining Rockford
and Brooklyn Park Clubs, and one individual the Bloomington Club.
We want to
thank the Hennepin County Fair Committee for inviting us to their event, and
providing the sand (for the pits), hay bales (for backstops), and prizes for
the contestants. Also, thanks to the members who helped with this project: Rick
Wright, Bert Logsdon, Joe and Joey Mueller, Dick Dvorak, George Nick, Marv and
Marlys Timm, Dale and Marlys Hustad, Steve and Nicole Lilly, Robin Constance,
Ron and Paula Mead, and Ward Lutz.
